"Mackay is not the center of the world, and the city has clearly suffered after Covid with a lot of store closures etc. It also doesn’t have the big tourist streams as larger Australian cities have. Seeing the selection of hotels, we chose to stay at the Ocean International as it is situated beautifully at the beach with a wonderful garden. Given that the hotel is quite affordable, we did expected that the hotel would be somewhat in need of renovation and that we were not to expect a premium experience. Sadly we were very disappointed. Checking in to our room late in the evening, we found cockroaches crawling around everywhere. Even on the bed. The very sweet receptionist gave us a new room, but sadly also here we had small ant like bugs crawling around the room constantly. The cleaning of the rooms clearly is not good enough, however sweet the cleaning personnel is. Mackay is a humid rainforest area, and the hotel is situated at a beach next to a huge forest. It is to be expected that the owners have pest control there to keep the rooms clean and comfortable. This was really not the experience we had, and we were disappointed with our stay. We also had to proactively ask for a refund of the difference for the downgrade of rooms, which did not add positively to an already under par experience."
