Immerse yourself in Scottish history at Auld Acquaintance Cottage on Burns' Ellisland Farm.
Nestled within the 18th century estate of Robert Burns himself, this beautiful and cosy riverside cottage is where Burns wrote the world famous Auld Lang Syne and Tam o Shanter!
The cottage is beautifully presented throughout with touches of Burns and his poetry, an ideal getaway from the hustle and bustle of every day life with a charming garden for summer and wood burning stove for winter months.
Enjoy a historic break at Auld Acquaintance Cottage.
Described in 'Alba' (The Times Scottish weekly lifestyle supplement) as "a magical getaway" it's easy to see why Scotlands national poet Robert (Rabbie) Burns chose this location for his home.
Nestled beside the river, Burns was inspired by the tranquil and scenic setting of Ellisland and called it 'the poets choice'. The farm itself was built in 1788 by Burns for his young wife Jean Armour and their family.
Burns was especially creative during his time at Ellisland Farm writing a quarter of his songs and poetry, including the world famous Auld Lang Syne, Tam o Shanter, My Heart's in the Highlands and Killiecrankie.
The farm itself has changed little since the 18th century and remains the most authentic of all his homes.
Today, visitors to Auld Acquaintance Cottage can experience the same sense of peace and tranquility and see nature through the great poets eyes by following in his footsteps along the same riverside and woodland paths.
Recently renovated to a high standard by the Ellisland Trust, the cottage itself has been designed in rich colours, natural textures and atmospheric lighting with contemporary Scottish styling making it the perfect getaway for a romantic weekend or historical family experience. Artisan and antique pieces combine for a modern rustic feel with artwork inspired by Burns.
Auld Acquaintance cottage looks on to the original farmhouse built by Burns where you can experience what life would have been like for a rural family in the 18th century. The museum includes an extensive collection of artefacts, memorabilia and manuscripts.
The view towards the river from the cottage is almost identical to the view that Burns would have enjoyed from the desk in his Spence.
The light, bright, spacious open plan sitting, kitchen and dining area is the perfect social space.
The fully equipped and beautifully fitted kitchen has everything you could need for preparing a light lunch or full evening meal, this can then be enjoyed at the dining table whilst looking out to the wonderful views of the Ellisland estate and countryside beyond.
Patio doors lead out to a charming enclosed garden area overlooking the River Nith, the garden is a great space to enjoy your morning coffee or evening glass of wine and with these views we couldn't think of a better way to start or end your day!
The cosy sitting area with comfortable sofa and armchair is an idyllic spot to curl up with a good book or your favourite TV show after a day exploring the estate and everything our beautiful region has to offer.
The locally designed wood burning stove is just perfect for those cooler evenings and is an ideal place to raise a dram (or glass of wine) in honour of our great bard!
