Biarritz is the ideal vacation spot for families and friends ; from outdoor activities to cultural visits, from shopping to beach dips, name it you have it. Enjoy the numerous beaches of Biarritz, Bidart, Ilbarritz, Anglet and so on…
Biarritz had been a humble whaling town on the Atlantic Ocean before it was discovered in the 1850s by Empress Eugénie de Montijo, the wife of Napoleon III. The couple commissioned an extravagant summer home on what was then just sand dunes, and so the Hôtel du Palais and Biarritz’s reputation as a getaway for nobility were born. A few steps from the Hôtel du Palais is Eugénie and Napoleon’s private chapel : Chapelle Imperiale. Among the plentiful of things to do in the imperial city, make sur to stop by Le Rocher de la Vierge from where you can look up to the Bay of Biarritz or down to the Côte des Basques, even making out the outline of the Pyrenees far behind. Another great point of view is the Lighthouse, make sure you are ready to take the 248 steps ! Discover the Port des Pêcheurs where you can come for dinner and have delicious fish and seafood.
A little south, discover the heart of Bidart : have a coffee in front of the city hall and take a walk along the cornice (Corniche de la Falaise). Continue to travel south and you’ll meet Guethary, the most elegant and exclusive village. You will not forget Cenitz beach, Lafitenia beach or the views of the mythical surf spot Parlementia. You will also love its nightlife and great restaurants (Le Madrid, Restaurant Le C, Heteroclito, Iluminabar).
For outdoorsy ones, go take a hike on the Sentier du littoral (Coastline Path) you will never forget, from Bidart to Hendaye (20 km). A little further on that same cornice, lose yourself in the stunning Château Observatoire Abbadia (Abbadia Observatory Castle). A few kilometers away, immerse yourself into one of the most famous nineteenth century’s french author’s life Edmond Rostand by visiting Villa Arnaga in Cambo les Bains.
There are also many other activities such as hobbie cat, canoeing, rafting, diving, surfing, hiking, horse riding.
Spain is only few kilometers away : famous for its tapas evenings in Old San Sebastian (25 minutes) or Hondarribia (15mn). Last but not least, the Bilbao Guggenheim museum is just over an hour from here… The Spanish traditional markets called “ventas” offer a wide variety of local products. You can find them all along the French-Spanish border.
The inland Basque area is authentic and preserved, a true paradise for biking and mountain hikes. It is also full of scenic traditional Basque villages you cannot miss. Travel around and discover a few of them : Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Sare, Espelette, Ainhoa, Urrugne…
